The Department of Commerce was established when Pavanatma College, Murickassery received permanent affiliation as a junior college in 1982, starting pre-degree batches for commerce. It achieved another milestone by becoming the first Post Graduate Department of the college on October 21, 1995.
The PG Department of Commerce provides comprehensive practical and theoretical education in various subjects such as Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Management, Capital Markets, and more to students enrolled in UG and PG programs. As Commerce is a professional field, the department is dedicated to enhancing the professional skills of students to help them succeed in their careers through direct placements or pursuing advanced professional certifications like CA, CS, CMA, etc. Recognizing the growing importance of commerce in terms of increasing enrollments and job prospects, the department organizes seminars, workshops, and additional courses to motivate and inspire students.
The department is also offering extension activities to meet the needs of the wider community. Some students excelled, achieving great success and making a mark in the department's academic history. The department made significant progress in higher education by establishing a computer lab in 2005 with the help of UGC funding. Currently, the department has a smart classroom equipped with multimedia and internet facilities.
The Department of Commerce received research center recognition in 2018 from Mahatma Gandhi University. Another feather was added to the department in 2020 with the introduction of the new generation course MCM (Master of Commerce and Management) with the intake of 20 students.
